Getting Your Groove On

Heading to the gym later today?  Don’t forget your sneakers, clean underwear and your Ipod.  There’s no doubt listening to music makes your workouts go faster.  In fact, there are studies that prove it.  Listening to music during exercise can get you to run harder and longer and even distract you from that nagging pain in your side.

 But did you know the kind of music pumping through your headphones can mean the difference between a good workout and a great one? 

 According to a recent study out of London, a song’s tempo is just as important as its motivational qualities.  You want to aim for a tune between 120 and 140 beats per minute.  For those who can’t count…that pace coincides with most pop, dance and rock songs.  (Not sure about those of you who may be sweatin’ to the oldies.)

 Some of my favorite songs to work out songs right now are:

 Sean Paul – “So Fine”

Kelly Clarkson – “I Do Not Hook-up”

Black Eyed Peas – “I’ve Got a Feeling” and “Boom Boom Pow” (really, anything by these guys gets my humps moving)

The Ting Tings – “That’s Not My Name”

Pink – “Please Don’t Leave Me”

 And here’s one you might not recognize:  Michael Franti and Spearhead – “Say Hey”.  Check out the video and then tell me it doesn’t get your ass moving!

    Yeah try working out to Jewel – my gym actually had that playing over the speakers once! Crazy! I stick to my ipod. Monkey Business by Black Eyed Peas is also a fast moving one. iTunes has a podcast called podrunner which has songs w/ different rpm’s depending on your workout.
