Soda Poop, er Pop

So if you weren’t living under a rock last week, chances are you heard about the study that found fecal matter in fountain sodas.  That’s right…poop in your pop.  (Insert your clever soda name here, my favorite is Caca Cola.)

Moving along…this study got a lot of publicity because 1) it’s disgusting and 2) it’s soda…everyone loves soda!  If you have no idea what I’m talking about, here it is in a nutshell: according to a study published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology, half of the local soda fountains in Roanoke, Virginia tested positive for fecal matter.  11 Percent tested positive for E. coli.

Sounds shocking, but if you weren’t paying close attention, you might have missed the fact that they only tested 30 soda fountains (I mean Roanoke can only have so many.)  But since when is 30 a suitable case study?  If this was a political poll that only asked 30 people if they thought the president was doing a good job, would we take the results seriously?

Sure, I think it’s disturbing that fecal matter was found in soda and yes, I’ll probably stick to buying canned/bottled soda, but we have to learn to see beyond the scare headlines.   The real headline here is that those employees aren’t washing their hands before returning to work and THAT’S what really is disgusting.
