Staying healthy in the aftermath of the Haiti quake

The latest news reports has tens of thousands of people dead following this week’s 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti.  But many more could lose their lives due to infectious diseases.

Doctors are worried about an outbreak of infectious diarrhea and/or respiratory infection.  Those diseases are easily spread in the living conditions now prevalent in post-quake Haiti.  All this in a country where before the disaster only 50 percent of people had access to clean water and only 19 percent have access to appropriate sanitation.

Experts are working to reduce the risk of outbreaks, but they have many weeks of work ahead of them, especially since most of the damage is centered on the country’s capital…the seat of its infrastructure.  There’s also a shortage of doctors.

Help is on the way from around the world and if you’d like to do your part, here’s a link to organizations looking for donations.
