Faster than a Speeding Bullet

New research came to light yesterday that claims to show humans are capable of running at a top speed of 40 mph.  (Makes my 11 minute mile seem sloth-like.)  To give you some perspective, lions run 50 mph and cheetahs top out at 70.

Up until know, it’s been widely believed that the force exerted at such a high speed keeps our bodies from achieving it, but according to scientists at Wyoming University, the rate at which human muscles contract should, in theory, permit them to run at such a high speed.

I say “in theory” because these scientists obviously haven’t been able to find a man or woman who runs that fast.   (The basis for their conclusion is largely numbers based.)  The closest to reach that speed is Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt, who even at his fastest still falls 12 mph below the mark.

I’m kind of curious to see what kind of effect this research will have on the competitive running world.  Will athletes invest in new technologies and harder training to prove the scientists right or will this study just be written off as sci-fy?
