Row, row, row your boat

Question:  why is the stationary rowing machine the least used machine at the gym?  Ok, maybe I’m being a little over-dramatic, but think about the last time you were at the gym and it was crowded.  I’m sure the line for the treadmill snaked around the exercise floor.  The line for the rowing machines, not so much, right?  Is it fear?  Is it the fact that you’re sitting so low to the ground?  Seriously, what gives?

Ok, I’ll be honest, I stayed away from that section of the gym when I first joined too, but all it took was one 10 minute session to realize it’s one of the best full body aerobic and strength exercises out there.  Depending on how you grip the handlebars, you can focus on your lower body (legs, gluts, hamstrings) or your upper body (back, biceps, shoulders, chest).  As for the calorie burn, a 150 pound person can burn upwards of 100 calories in just 15 minutes.  (There’s a reason those folks who do crew look the way they do.)

So the next time you’re bored with your workout or just don’t feel like waiting on line for the elliptical, hop on one of those empty rowers.  You’ll be pretty amazed with the results.
