Mmmm...coffee

When my alarm goes off in the morning my ritual is as follows: stumble out of bed and into the kitchen where I immediately put on a pot of coffee.  I’ll usually down two cups of joe before heading out the door and then maybe pour myself yet another cup once I reach the office.  I do it because it wakes me up.  But all that latte lugging may be pointless.

Experts say people who drink a lot of caffeine (like me) develop a tolerance to the pick-me-up effects.  In other words, after a while, there’s no amount of coffee that’ll keep you awake after an all nighter if you regularly drink up to 6 cups a day.  Not surprising, non-coffee drinkers are more likely to get that morning jolt from a cup of joe.

Plus, they say us heavy coffee drinkers are actually drinking that much because we’re trying to ward off the effects of withdrawal.  (Caffeine is the world’s most popular drug.)

So how much coffee is too much?  Researchers say four to five cups per day is safe.

Why a lack of sleep is a health nightmare

Do you get less than 6-8 hours of sleep a night?  If the answer is yes, then I hate to break it to you, but you’re not going to live as long as the rest of us. (sorry!) 

The state of your health if you get less than eight hours of sleep a night.

Italian and British researchers warn that people banking less than 6 hours of zzzs a night were 12 percent more likely to die over a 25 year period than those who got 8.  And if 8 hours of sleep is good for you, 9 or more must be better right?  Dead wrong.  These same scientists say there’s a direct relationship between sleeping more than 9 hours and an early death.

So the magic number seems to be 8.  But how many of us consistently hit that mark every night?  Not many people I know.  Although I’ll take this as an excuse to unplug and hit the sack early.

What do sheep have to do with sleep?

I find myself thinking a lot about sleep this morning.  Probably because I’m on the tail end of an overnight shift and didn’t get enough of it.  I hope to be halfway to dreamland before my head hits the pillow later, but if the zzzs ellude me, there are always those sheep that need counting.  Ever wonder why we count sheep instead of some other barnyard animal or whether is actually works?  Then check this out.  It’s sure to put some of your questions to bed.  Sweet dreams!

Banking those Zzzzs

Ever wish you could store up sleep for those days when you know you won’t be getting many zzzzs?  Turns out you can.

According to a study out of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, getting extra sleep before a period of sleep deprivation can lessen the effects of lost sleep.

Says one researcher:

“What we’re basically saying is if you fill up your reserves and pay back your sleep debt ahead of time, you’re better equipped to deal with the sleep loss challenge.”

It remains unclear how much sleep an individual needs to benefit. 

As for those of you who just can’t seem to get to bed early, researchers say getting the extra sleep from naps is just as beneficial.  As for those of you who claim you can’t nap…well…how about we just leave that for another post.
