Row, row, row your boat

January 28, 2010

Question:  why is the stationary rowing machine the least used machine at the gym?  Ok, maybe I’m being a little over-dramatic, but think about the last time you were at the gym and it was crowded.  I’m sure the line for the treadmill snaked around the exercise floor.  The line for the rowing machines, not so much, right?  Is it fear?  Is it the fact that you’re sitting so low to the ground?  Seriously, what gives?

Ok, I’ll be honest, I stayed away from that section of the gym when I first joined too, but all it took was one 10 minute session to realize it’s one of the best full body aerobic and strength exercises out there.  Depending on how you grip the handlebars, you can focus on your lower body (legs, gluts, hamstrings) or your upper body (back, biceps, shoulders, chest).  As for the calorie burn, a 150 pound person can burn upwards of 100 calories in just 15 minutes.  (There’s a reason those folks who do crew look the way they do.)

So the next time you’re bored with your workout or just don’t feel like waiting on line for the elliptical, hop on one of those empty rowers.  You’ll be pretty amazed with the results.

Slow down there, partner!

January 6, 2010

I’m all for new technology that helps us fight the battle of the bulge, but I’m not quite sure about this latest gizmo.

It’s called the Mandometer and it’s a talking computerized weighing device that tracks how fast you’re eating your food off of the plate.  If it senses your scarfing your meal down, it’ll tell you to slow down.  A kind of stressful way to eat, I think.  I know I don’t want to worry about being yelled at when I eat.

What’s even worse is that this gadget is intended for kids.  Yup, the Mandometer is the latest way to help prevent childhood obesity.

According to the British Medical Journal, kids who used the device at mealtime weighed less and ate smaller portions after 12 months.

So maybe it works, but correct me if I’m wrong…aren’t parents supposed to be watching what and how much their kids eat?  I mean, the Mandometer can’t tell if that plate is full of fries or carrot sticks.  The first line of defense in fighting childhood obesity is parents.  They need to be making the healthy eating choices and teaching their kids how to eat smart.

Grin and Bear It

December 23, 2009

Ok, so we all have heard of sports enhancing drugs, even sports enhancing clothes (like those Speedo racer swimsuits), but now comes the performance enhancing mouth guard.  Yup, you read that right, mouth guard.

But this isn’t the same one your brother uses for hockey or football.  No sir.  These light and flexible pieces of oral plastic fit over your teeth to correctly align and relax your jaw, thereby opening your airways allowing you to breathe more freely and efficiently. (Read as: superior athletic performance.)  Who knew?!

Bet you saw this coming, though…these guards can set you back hundreds, even thousands of dollars.  Derek Jeter won a world championship with them…that means they must be good, right?

For more info go here.  Buy them here and here.

From Couch Potato to Stud Spud

October 7, 2009

This day and age everyone is looking to save a buck or two.  (I know I am!)  Some people are saving dough by canceling their gym memberships.  With monthly fees as high as $100 at some places, I can’t say I blame them, but this isn’t an excuse to get doughy.  Enter Exercise TV.exercisetv2

Available with Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Verizon, Exercise TV is a video-on-demand television network and there are programs for every fitness type.

In a hurry?…choose one of the 10 minute workout options.  Looking to get rid of that spare tire?…there are a number of ab centric workouts.  Want to workout without feeling like you’re working out?…select one of the many dance class options from hip-hop to disco to Bollywood to Carmen Electra’s striptease.  If you’re looking for something with a slower pace, yoga and pilates shows are also available.

Best of all…there are hardly any commercials.  There’s one at the start of the show and then the occasional pop-up ad, but no breaks during the workout.

So get up off the couch and get moving!  You’ve really got no excuse now!

There’s an app for that

September 25, 2009

If you’re looking for some help to a little weight, look no further than that iPhone that is constantly clutched in your hand.iphone

Believe it or not there’s an app to help you stay on track…hundreds in fact.

There’s the Lose It! app, which lets you plug in how much you weigh now and how many pounds you want to lose and then calculates how many calories you can eat to reach your goal.  It also lets you keep track of those calories, as well as the ones you burn off through exercise.

If you’re keeping an old-fashioned food journal (like me), there’s the LiveStrong app which has calorie info on 450, 000 foods.

And for all you Weight Watchers…there’s the iWatcher app.

Those are just a sampling of the numerous apps out there.  For a more detailed list check out this list of 100 iPhone apps that make weight loss easy.
